CROSSRAIL CUSTOM HOUSE

Newham, London

Custom House is one of eight new stations being built in London to service the new Crossrail route. It is the only surface-level central station and, as such, will act as the threshold for the city’s eastern fringe.

The station is arranged in a straightforward and legible way, and comprises a two-storey open colonnade that contains all vertical circulation, staff accommodation and customer services. The open column structure is raised on a base represented by the perimeter wall above street level and set at nine meter centres increases visibility from the surrounding streets and direct visual connectivity with local community. The concourse that sits above the platforms is covered by an ETFE canopy to complete the architectural composition.
