Located at the heart of Aston University, this competition entry for a new University Centre sought to unite the disparate parts if the new campus. The fragmented plan, broken into its constituent parts, provided the possibility of a more complex composition to link the university’s existing buildings, to emphasise routes and vistas, and to provide an emblematic assembly to buildings to promote its identity.
A partially glazed mall provided a sheltered entrance to the conference centre and establishes a formal link between existing student union and the library. While the symmetrical residential building completes a courtyard with the management centre, the roof of the new auditorium steps down to form an external amphitheatre facing the main university entrance. Seminar rooms and support areas are accommodated in separate but linked pavilions.
