Two RIBA London Awards for Allies and Morrison

Two Allies and Morrison projects have been honoured this year with RIBA London Awards for architecture excellence: The Maurice Wohl Neurosciences Institute at King’s College in Denmark Hill and the Headquarters for Banham Group in Earlsfield, south London.

Refurbishment appointment with the Wellcome Trust

The Wellcome Trust has appointed Allies and Morrison to refurbish the panel rooms at its headquarters, the Gibbs Building, in London. The award winning building, located on Euston Road was designed by Hopkins Architects and completed in 2004. The existing panel rooms, which occupy about half of the ground floor, are at the heart of the Wellcome Trust and central to its grant-giving activities.

Allies and Morrison’s design for Banham Group’s headquarters at Thornsett Road, Wandsworth, London has won a coveted British Council for Offices (BCO) award. The project scooped up the top honours for Corporate Workplace in the BCO London and the South East competition. Recently opened, the winning project is the new home for a family-owned security firm in southwest London.

The practice’s ongoing work at Trumpington Meadows, Cambridge, has reached an important milestone. Phase 9 of the project received reserved matters approval from Cambridge City Council in a unanimous decision from the committee last week. This newest addition will add 64 houses and 58 apartments to this ambitious housing scheme.

The UK chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has recognised Rambert, the home for Britain’s national company for contemporary dance, in its 2016 awards programme. The project won a Commendation in the chapter’s Excellence in Design Awards.

Leamouth South: unanimous approval for new riverside neighbourhood

Once the focus of ship building and with a proud maritime past, Leamouth peninsula is a place steeped in London’s past history as a port. It will soon be home to a new riverside neighbourhood with more than 800 new homes and spaces for leisure, education, retail, restaurants and flexible working. A detailed application for planning approval was consented on 12th April by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets allowing this exciting project to move forward.

Think of London, one immediately thinks of its river. Viewed from above, it runs right through the heart of the capital, its curvilinear shape synonymous with London. From the pageants captured by Canaletto to the setting of UNESCO Heritage sites such as the Palace of Westminster and the Tower of London, the river has been central to London’s story. Yet today, as London experiences one of its most exciting periods of growth and development, the river’s character may merit protection as a great urban space.

Facilitating the Unlimited Doha Design Prize

Allies and Morrison were delighted to participate in an exciting cross-cultural collaboration between the UK and the Gulf states. Organised by the British Council in partnership with the Supreme Council for Delivery and Legacy, Partner Simon Gathercole recently served as lead facilitator for the Unlimited Doha Design Prize, an initiative that brings together young architectural talent to generate new ideas. Under the title ‘the Open City’, the 2016 programme explored themes of mobility and movement, space and accessibility in emerging Middle Eastern cities with Doha as their laboratory.

Friargate Station Square Opens in Coventry

Long cut off from one another by a 1960’s era ring road, Coventry’s city centre and train station are linked again with the opening last week of Station Square. The new public realm is set within Friargate, an ambitious new quarter that will greatly expand the city’s provision of high quality office and commercial space.

New Homes in Lampton Park Get the Go Ahead

An exciting new Allies and Morrison-designed scheme in Hounslow, west London, was granted planning permission last week. The project, for Notting Hill Housing, will eventually have up to 940 new homes of which 40% will be affordable. A mixture of studio, one, two and three bedroom properties, the new neighbourhood will be at the edge of Lampton Park, on the site of the 1960s era Hounslow Civic Centre and in close proximity to the Hounslow Central Underground Station.

On 10 March 2016, Allies and Morrison was delighted to be present at the opening of King's College School's newest building in Wimbledon, southwest London. King's, an independent day school founded in 1829, is widely regarded as one of the most academically successful schools in the country.

GEOGRAPHY AND IDENTITY IN EMERGING CITIES

In February, partner Alfredo Caraballo gave a thematic talk on ‘Geography and Identity’ at WAF Dubai. Dubai – a city that is a global crossroads, where native residents are outnumbered by more than one in six – is an apt place to explore these topics. It and other cities in the Gulf Region have undergone rapid development, much of it manifested in a global architecture. As a counterpoint, Alfredo shared how our work in the region strives to be locally rooted – with examples in three cities: Beirut, Doha and Muscat. Each of these growing cities came from somewhere.

Success at Oxford Station

Allies and Morrison has been selected as one of three winners in the competition to imagine a new train station for Oxford. Organised by RIBA competitions, the ideas contest invited six award-winning practices to create visions for a new station and surrounding public realm. The jury commended the entry for ‘its simplicity of approach and very attractive main station building’. The competition is a joint initiative of Network Rail, Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council.

Exploiting the potential of the pre-existing

A stadium long empty, disused rail sheds and a granary, a contaminated derelict landscape; rather than things to erase, to build over, these are opportunities to re-imagine. In three different parts of London, each has provided the chance to transform rather than just build anew. Sharing these at the JUNG Architekturgespräche (Architecture Talks) in Berlin, partner Bob Allies illustrated that in many cases the most successful urban projects are those that exploit the potential of the pre-existing.

REVISED VAUXHALL SQUARE GETS THE GO AHEAD

Lambeth Council has granted amended planning permission to Vauxhall Square, an important new development at Vauxhall, Nine Elms in London. The change replaces a previously planned four-star hotel with a further 108,586 ft² (10,088 m²) of grade A offices, increasing the office element in the scheme to over 350,000 ft².

THE PLANNING AWARDS 2015: LINCOLNSHIRE LAKES WINS PLANNING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AWARD

The Lincolnshire Lakes masterplan won the Planning for the Environment category at The Planning Awards 2015 in London. The masterplan, prepared for the Lucent Group, outlines the development of two new villages and a commercial park on land between the River Trent and the western extent of Scunthorpe. The 250ha site will deliver up to 3,000 new homes and will play an instrumental role in delivering the wider Lincolnshire Lakes vision.

ALLIES AND MORRISON FFC ARCHITECTURAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

Last night the Allies and Morrison FFC won the victory match of the Architecture Football League against Squire and Partners at 13-2 and claimed their second league title. The victory was made all the sweeter as the league’s conclusion was taken right to the wire by the Feilden Cleggs Barcelona’s FFC who won all but one of their matches. The short, and the long, of it was the FCB’s results left AAM FC needing to maintain a 100% record to retain the title, which they duly delivered with a perfect record of 15 played and 15 won.

STAFF SUBMIT DRAWINGS FOR ARTICLE 25’S 10×10 CHARITY AUCTION

Anna Gibb and Siu Lon Liu have donated original artworks for Article 25's 2015 10x10 London charity auction. The event, which takes place on 1 December at the Royal Institute of British Architects, will help raise funds for the work of Article 25, who design and oversee the construction of safe, appropriate buildings in the developing world.

BANHAMS NEW OFFICE ON THORNSETT ROAD OPENING PARTY

Banham's new office in Earlsfield, designed by Allies and Morrison, was officially opened yesterday evening by MP Ian Duncan Smith. Throughout the evening, tours of the new facility were provided and Charles Hallett and Lucy Banham showcased the history of the Banham Group and talked about their delight with the new building and its significance for the Banham family business.

PLANNING GRANTED FOR COOLING POD AT KING’S CROSS, LONDON

The King's Cross Zone T Cooling Pod for King's Cross Masterplan has been approved by Camden Council. The building will provide a centralised cooling generation plant for a number of buildings within the King's Cross Central limited Partnership (KCCLP) development. The building optimises the sustainable generation of energy through Tri-generation (combined heat, power & cooling), allowing the site wide CHP to be more efficiently used throughout the year.

CONSULTATION EVENTS FOR THE VISIONING VAUXHALL PROJECT

On Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd October the Allies and Morrison Urban Practitioners team ran consultation events for the Visioning Vauxhall project, commissioned by Lambeth Council. The project seeks the views from those who live, work and travel through Vauxhall on how the area could look and feel in the future. The exhibition included a series of images and plans to visualise the changes coming to Vauxhall, reflect the opinions expressed so far and to gather more suggestions on future improvements that people would like to see. The team will be producing a final vision document in November.

SITE PROGRESS AT WOOD WHARF, CANARY WHARF

Cell 1 of the 'Combi Wall' coffer dam on the south and west of the Wood Wharf site at Canary Wharf has recently been completed. This will form the outer edge of a new basement to be excavated behind the retained 'banana walls' which are listed structures.

ALLIES AND MORRISON SOCIAL DRAWING EVENT

Last week Allies and Morrison held a social drawing event for staff led by tutors from Drawing at Work. The evening was split into three activities: life drawing, tonal studies (buildings and celebrity portraits) and paper folding which produced some amazing abstract forms. There was a vast variety of work produced and everything was pinned up at the end of the evening. The best examples won prizes: congratulations to Jovita Stakionyte, Luca Saiani, Tatiana Telles Ferreira, Karabo Turner, Jane Manning and Holly Barker.

GREENWICH PENINSULA MASTERPLAN RECEIVES PLANNING APPROVAL

A new masterplan for Greenwich Peninsula, developed by Allies and Morrison, has been approved by the Royal Borough of Greenwich. With over 15,000 homes, a new transport hub, film and media studios, shops, restaurants and a 5km running track encircling the site, it is the largest planning application to have been processed by a London borough. It was a fantastic day which included tours of our projects at Fitzwilliam College and Ash Court, Girton College followed by lunch at St Johns and then punting down the River Cam to the new studio.

Hereford Old Market has been shortlisted in the this years Brick Awards in the Best Commercial Building and Best Urban Regeneration Project categories. The awards recognise excellence in design and construction using brick. The winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on the 18 November in London.

ALLIES AND MORRISON HOST A DESIGN CHARETTE FOR ARCHITECT STUDENTS

Last week Allies and Morrison were host to a Design Charette for Architecture students from the University of Idaho and Anglia Ruskin University. 8-10 MOORGATE AWARDED CITY OF LONDON HERITAGE AWARD

8-10 Moorgate has won the annual City of London Heritage Award. This morning the Chairman of the City Heritage Society, Peter Luscombe and the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alan Yarrow, presented Graham Morrison with the award certificate and unveiled the award plaque at a ceremony within 8-10 Moorgate. This prestigious award, now over 30 years old, is given each year to the best refurbishment project in the City.

BARTLETT SCHOOL STUDENTS BUILD SEVEN OUTDOOR STRUCTURES WITHIN THE SKIP GARDEN, KING’S CROSS

ALLIES AND MORRISON APPOINTED TO REDEVELOP ELEPHANT AND CASTLE

Allies and Morrison is developing a design for the redevelopment of the Elephant and Castle shopping centre and London College of Communication sites for Delancey's client fund DV4 and APG, Europe's largest pension fund asset manager. The development will include a broad range of residential typologies with over 1,000 units, a new campus for the London College of Communication and the University of Arts London, a new London underground station, commercial space and a retail town centre.

PLANNING GRANTED FOR MICHAEL UREN BUILDING AT IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON’S WHITE CITY CAMPUS

OLYMPICOPOLIS WIN

We are delighted to have been chosen to design the Olympicopolis culture and education quarter with O'Donnell and Tuomey and Josep Camps/Olga Felip Arquitecturia. We have worked collaboratively as a team with Buro Happold, Gustafson Porter, Charcoal Blue and Gardiner and Theobald. The site, at the gateway to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, East London includes new buildings for the Victoria and Albert Museum, Sadler's Wells and the London College of Fashion, part of the University of the Arts London. The Smithsonian Institute too is in discussion to be part of the scheme and open its first permanent museum outside the United States. Proposals will also provide 75,000sqm of residential space.

ALLIES AND MORRISON TO DEVELOP MASTERPLAN FOR ST JOHN’S COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE

St John's College has appointed Allies and Morrison to help develop a 20 year masterplan for its diverse estate covering 25 hectares in central and west Cambridge. The masterplan will review all College operations and address how it might respond to the changing centre of gravity in Cambridge, with the University developing land to the west and northwest of the city.

MAURICE WOHL CLINICAL NEUROSCIENCE INSTITUTE: OPENED BY HRH THE PRINCESS ROYAL

HRH The Princess Royal opened the Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute at King's College London, one of the leading centres for neuroscience research in the world. The building, designed by Allies and Morrison with Devereux Architects, provides flexible, sustainable accommodation which includes research laboratories for stroke and head injury, neurogenetics, epilepsy and neurodegeneration, and a series of office and seminar spaces.

PEDELLE 2015: WOMEN’S CHARITY BIKE RIDE ACROSS SPAIN

Some 25 women from across the built environment (including Vicky Thornton from Allies and Morrison) completed a three-day bike ride, travelling more than 450km from Bilbao to Madrid, to raise more that £20,000 for children’s charity, Coram.
